Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty Movie: What is IUI procedure to become a mother?

Telugu movie “Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty” has been released on September 8. Anushka Shetty and Naveen Polishetty played lead roles in this movie.

Anvita Ravali Shetty (Anushka Shetty) has no faith in love, marriage and relationships. However, Anvita wants to give birth to a child through IUI without getting married. While looking for a sperm donor for this, she meets standup comedian Sidhu Polishetty (Naveen Polishetty). This is how the story starts.

What is IUI procedure?

Full form of IUI is Intra-uterine Insemination.

IUI is a fertility treatment where sperm is directly placed into a woman’s uterus to enhance the chances of fertilization.

IUI procedure involves the following steps

1. Ovulation Monitoring: Before starting an IUI cycle, a woman’s menstrual cycle is closely monitored. This typically involves tracking the development of follicles (fluid-filled sacs containing eggs) using ultrasound scans and hormone level measurements. This helps determine the optimal time for the IUI procedure, usually when the follicles are mature.

2. Fertility Medications (Optional): Depending on the individual’s fertility condition, fertility medications such as Clomiphene citrate or Gonadotropins may be prescribed to stimulate the ovaries and promote the development of multiple mature follicles, increasing the chances of successful fertilization.

3. Semen Collection: On the day of the procedure, the male partner or a sperm donor provides a semen sample. This sample is then processed in the laboratory to isolate the most active and healthy sperm.

4. Sperm Washing: The collected semen is “washed” or processed to separate the sperm from the seminal fluid. This concentrates the sperm and removes any potentially harmful substances.

5. Insemination: The prepared sperm is then placed directly into the woman’s uterus using a thin, flexible catheter. This process is typically painless and done in a doctor’s office. The goal is to introduce a higher concentration of healthy sperm closer to the fallopian tubes, where fertilization usually occurs.

6. Rest and Observation: After the insemination, the woman may be asked to rest for a short period. Some clinics may recommend lying down for about 15-30 minutes to allow the sperm a better chance to travel through the cervix and into the uterus.

7. Follow-Up: In the following weeks, a pregnancy test is performed to determine if the IUI was successful. If not, the procedure can be repeated in subsequent cycles.

Please note: Only a fertility specialist can provide personalized guidance on whether IUI is a suitable option and what specific protocol to follow.

Ministry of health and research of India released some specific guidelines for IUI treatment.

Difference between IUI and IVF

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) and IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) are two different assisted reproductive technologies used to address fertility issues, but they vary significantly in their approach and complexity:

1. Process: IUI: In IUI, sperm is placed directly into the woman’s uterus during her natural or medicated menstrual cycle. The goal is to increase the chances of sperm reaching and fertilizing the egg naturally inside the fallopian tubes.

IVF: IVF involves the extraction of eggs from the woman’s ovaries, fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory dish, and then transferring one or more embryos back into the woman’s uterus.

2. Indications: IUI: Typically used for cases of mild male infertility, unexplained infertility, or when there are issues with cervical mucus. It’s also a less invasive option for couples trying to conceive.

IVF: Often recommended for more complex fertility issues, such as severe male infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, advanced maternal age, or when other treatments like IUI have not been successful.

3. Medications: IUI: May or may not involve fertility medications to stimulate egg production. IVF: Almost always involves fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries and produce multiple eggs for retrieval.

4. Fertilization Location: IUI: Fertilization occurs naturally inside the woman’s body.

IVF: Fertilization occurs outside the body in a laboratory.

5. Success Rates: IUI: Generally has lower success rates compared to IVF, particularly for certain fertility issues.

IVF: Tends to have higher success rates as it allows for more controlled conditions and the selection of the healthiest embryos.

6. Cost and Invasiveness: IUI: Generally less expensive and less invasive than IVF.

IVF: Typically more costly and involves a more complex and invasive process.

7. Multiple Pregnancy Risk: IUI: Carries a lower risk of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.) compared to IVF.

IVF: Has a higher risk of multiple pregnancies, which can be a concern for some couples.

The choice between IUI and IVF depends on individual fertility factors, the cause of infertility, financial considerations, and personal preferences. Couples should consult with a fertility specialist to determine which option is most suitable for their specific situation.
